In June 2023, Ross Golf Design was selected by the Jekyll Island State Park Authority to lead a full-course restoration of Walter Travis's historic nine-hole Great Dunes Course at Jekyll Island Golf Club in coastal Georgia. In addition to the restoration of the Great Dunes nine, the project also included the creation of nine new Travis-inspired holes on a portion of the former Oleander Course to complete the new 18-hole Great Dunes Course. RGD worked in collaboration with fellow architect Jeff Stein of Brooklyn, NY-based Stein Golf Design and an incredible team of shapers led by Dan Loveridge and Chris Staffeldt while MacCurrach Golf Construction from Jacksonville, Florida served as the Golf Course Contractor for the project.

The team restored or redesigned, as appropriate, all golf course features including new greens, tees, fairways, and sand bunkers, completed extensive tree removal, turfgrass reduction, and dunescape restoration, installed new state-of-the-art irrigation and drainage systems, regrassed the entire golf course, and constructed a new driving range and practice facility. The new Great Dunes Course opened to rave reviews from the golfing public on November 1, 2025 and has received several awards already, including being named the Best Reimagined Public Course for 2025 by Sports Illustrated and the #2 Editor's Choice: Best New Courses We Played in 2025 by GOLFPASS. Jekyll Island annually hosts the largest Division III Golf Tournament in the country, the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational, and beginning in 2026, the Great Dunes will serve as the primary host course for the event.
